How to Install Mobile Home Ground Anchors
Mobile home ground anchors are a vital part of any tie-down system, which helps to prevent a mobile or manufactured home from shifting or even lifting during a storm.mobile home ground anchors When a home is properly anchored, it reduces the likelihood of severe structural damage and provides peace of mind to homeowners.
Whether you live in an area prone to hurricanes, tornadoes or high seasonal winds, you should ensure that your mobile home is properly anchored.mobile home ground anchors Luckily, the process is relatively simple and can be done in a matter of hours. To get started, simply find out how many anchors your municipality requires and make sure they are all properly installed.
The type of anchor you choose will depend on your soil conditions. For example, auger anchors are a good choice for most standard soil conditions and are easy to install using a drill with an extension. Drive or rock anchors are more specialized and require special equipment to install but offer plenty of holding power. You’ll also want to consider whether you need over-the-top or frame anchors. Over-the-top anchors are essentially steel straps that run from the roof of your mobile home to the ground, while frame anchors attach directly to the frame rails.
When it comes to installing the anchors, a subcontractor will use an auger machine to dig holes in the ground at least 30” deep. After the anchor is inserted into the hole, it’s topped with a washer and nut before it is bolted to the base-rail of your mobile or modular home. For extra protection, you can also add a metal stabilization collar to the top of the anchor.
Once the anchors are in place, they are fastened to the foundation with steel straps. You will also need turnbuckles (a device designed for adjusting the tension of the anchors and straps), which should be corrosion resistant. Finally, you will need hook-ups and a tensioning device that is certified to withstand an allowable working load of at least 4,725 pounds.
It’s important to check the condition of your anchor points regularly, especially before a strong storm. If you notice any signs of wear or rust, be sure to replace them. Likewise, you should inspect the straps for any signs of wear or corrosion. Before each storm, you should also test the strength of your anchors by lifting the home.
Aside from minimizing structural damage, a well-anchored mobile or manufactured home reduces the risk of leaky windows, doors and floors, and can lower your maintenance costs over time. If your home isn’t properly anchored, you can experience issues like crooked flooring, wall cracks and window seal failures.
